Pattern Specifics

  • Measurements: Approximately 6.5” standing and 5” sitting (4.0mm hook) or 9” standing and 7” sitting (5.0mm hook)
  • Gauge: Not necessary for this pattern; see notes
  • Hook Size: 4.0mm (G) or 5.0mm (H) crochet hook
  • Other Tools: tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors
  • Yarn Weight: Medium (4) Worsted Weight or Super Bulky (6)
  • Yarn Used: WeCrochet/Knit Picks Brava Worsted or Premier Yarns Parfait Chunky
  • Yardage:
    • Color A (brown): 46 yds (Worsted), 66 yds (Bulky)
    • Color B (white): 16 yds (Worsted), 24 yds (Bulky)
    • Color C (red): 3 yds (Worsted), 4 yds (Bulky)
  • Other Materials: poly-fil stuffing, safety eyes (9mm or 12mm), small amount of black yarn for embroidery

Abbreviations

  • st = stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • ch = chain
  • SC = single crochet
  • SC2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together (invisible decrease recommended)

Special Stitches

SC2tog (invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of the second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.

Notes

  • Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight to prevent stuffing from showing through.
  • All pieces are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
  • Invisible decreases are recommended; see “Special Stitches” for instructions.
  • Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; if making this toy for a baby, consider using yarn, felt, or embroidered details instead.
  • All pieces, except for the ears, require stuffing. Stuff each piece as you work. Do not add stuffing to the ears.

Pattern

Legs (make 2)

Using color A (brown):

    R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)
    R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)
    R3: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)
    R4: Working in back loops only, 1 SC in each st around. (18 sts)
    R5: *SC2tog, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)
    R6-10: 1 SC in each st around. (12 sts)
    Fill with stuffing.
    R11: Fold the leg closed. Working through both sides, 1 SC in each st across, leaving 1 unworked st on each side. (5 sts)
    Cut yarn and fasten off.
    

Body

Using color B (white):

    R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)
    R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)
    R3: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)
    R4: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
    R5: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. (30 sts)
    R6: 1 SC in each of the next 9 sts, place first leg with 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts, place second leg with 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 9 sts. (30 sts)
    R7-12: 1 SC in each st around. (30 sts)
    R13: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
    R14: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)
    R15: *SC2tog, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)
    Fill with stuffing.
    Do not fasten off. Move on to the head.
    

Head

Using color A (brown):

    R16: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)
    R17: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
    R18: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. (30 sts)
    R19: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 4 sts. Repeat from * around. (36 sts)
    R20-24: 1 SC in each st around. (36 sts)
    R25: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 4 sts. Repeat from * around. (30 sts)
    R26: 1 SC in each st around. (30 sts)
    R27: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)

    If using safety eyes, insert them now between R23-24, with 5 sts between.

    R28: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)
    Fill with stuffing.
    R29: *SC2tog, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)
    R30: *SC2tog. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)
    Weave in and out of remaining sts and pull tight to close. Fasten off.
    

Arms (make 2)

Using color A (brown):

    R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)
    R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)
    R3-5: 1 SC in each st around. (12 sts)
    R6: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (9 sts)
    R7-9: 1 SC in each st around. (9 sts)
    Fill with stuffing.
    R10: Fold the arm closed. Working through both sides to close, 1 SC in each st across, leaving 1 unworked st at the beginning of the fold. (4 sts)
    Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.
    

Snout

Using color A (brown):

    R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)
    R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)
    R3: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. (15 sts)
    R4: 1 SC in each st around. (15 sts)
    Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.
    Fill with stuffing.
    

Ears (make 2)

Using color A (brown):

    R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)
    R2: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (9 sts)
    R3: 1 SC in each st around. (9 sts)
    R4: Fold the ear closed. Working through both sides to close, 1 SC in each st across, leaving 1 unworked st at the beginning of the fold. (4 sts)
    Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.
    

Assembly & Finishing

  • Pin the snout to the front of the face, just below the eyes, over R19-23. Begin sewing, leaving an opening to add stuffing, then finish sewing.
  • Using black yarn, embroider a nose on the snout at R2-3 with a line downwards to the middle of the magic ring.
  • Attach ears to each side of the top of the head, between R26-29.
  • Align pins along the body to outline the baseball threads. Using red yarn, embroider lines in the shape of a V around the body to resemble a baseball.
  • Attach arms over R11-14 on each side of the body, leaving approximately 8 sts between the arms at the top and 16 sts at the bottom.
