Free Crochet Pattern: Butterfly
Materials and Tools
- Materials: Yarn (choose your preferred color, typically one main color for the body and an optional color for decoration); stuffing (optional, for a fuller look).
- Tools: Crochet hook (commonly 2.0mm - 2.5mm, depending on yarn thickness), scissors, sewing needle.
1. Crocheting the Butterfly Body (Optional)
- Magic ring: Wrap the yarn around your finger to form a loop, insert the hook into the loop, and make a chain stitch as a starting stitch (this stitch doesn’t count toward the stitch count). Then, crochet 6 single crochets into this loop.
- Slip stitch into the first single crochet to close the round and form a small circle, which will serve as the base for the butterfly body.
2. Crocheting the Butterfly Wings (One Pair)
First Layer of Wings
- Foundation: Start with 7 chain stitches, then join the beginning and end with a slip stitch to form a ring.
- In the ring: Crochet 4 pairs of double treble crochets, with 3 chain stitches between each pair. This creates 4 large open spaces in the circle, forming the basic shape of the wings.
- Continue in the ring: Crochet 3 bobble stitches (with 2 chain stitches in between), followed by 1 more bobble stitch. Then chain 5, and in the middle space, crochet 3 half double crochets, followed by a picot stitch (picot stitch: crochet 3 chain stitches, then 1 single crochet in the same place). Finish with 5 chain stitches. This round adds texture and dimension to the wings.
Second Layer of Wings (Attach to First Layer)
- Change yarn (if using a different color): Insert the hook into any spot on the first layer, make 7 chain stitches to connect and form the base for the second layer of wings.
- Following the same pattern as the first layer, crochet 4 pairs of double treble crochets with 3 chain stitches between each pair. Then continue with bobble stitches, chain stitches, half double crochets, and picot stitches to complete part of the second wing layer.
- Repeat these steps to complete the second layer of wings, matching the shape of the first layer but making it slightly larger to create a layered look.
3. Crocheting the Other Wing
- Repeat the above wing instructions to crochet the second wing. Ensure both wings are as symmetrical as possible for a balanced and aesthetic butterfly.
4. Assembly and Finishing
- If you crocheted a body for the butterfly, sew both wings to the body with a sewing needle or crochet hook. If you didn’t make a body, simply sew the two wings together at the appropriate points to complete the butterfly.
- Optional: Add stuffing between the wings if you want them to appear fuller.
- Final touches: Trim any loose threads with scissors for a clean look. If desired, add decorations like small beads or embroidery to embellish the butterfly’s wings.
Your butterfly is ready!
Enjoy making your beautiful butterfly!
