Sailor Venus Free Pattern


 

Materials:

  • Crochet hook size 2.0mm for the body and 2.2mm hook for dress and hair
  • Yarn: 2mm cotton yarn
    • Body: Susan 07 or Baby Yarn 03
    • Dress: Ginger- Baby Yarn 13; White - Gazzal Baby Cotton 3410
    • Hair: Baby Yarn 10
    • Bow: Royal Blue - Baby Yarn 19
  • 9mm plastic eyes; 0.5mm button for the dress
  • Black thread to embroider the eyebrows and eyelashes
  • Sewing needle, some pins, scissors, fabric glue/ hot glue gun
  • Fiberfill for stuffing
  • Soft wires and 8cm plastic straw (optional) to insert into the neck and make the head straight
  • Finished product is 22 cm tall

Abbreviations:

  • Rnd1: round 1
  • st/sts: Stitch/Stitches
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • de: double crochet
  • trb: treble crochet
  • sist: slip stitch
  • inc: crochet 2 single stitches in the same stitch
  • Inc3: crochet 3 single crochet in the same stitch
  • Inc4: crochet 4 single crochet in the same stitch
  • hdc inc: crochet 2 half double crochet in the same stitch
  • de inc: crochet 2 double crochet in the same stitch
  • hs1: hair strand 1
  • FLO: crochet through front loops only
  • BLO: back loop only
  • dec: invisible decrease by crocheting 2 sts together through front loops only

Notes:

  • This pattern is using US crochet terminology. Work in spiral rounds, do not slip stitch unless stated. Crochet with tight stitches to make the doll look nice and neat.
  • For the doll body, I do yarn under to make x stitch, the stitches will be neat and nice when stuffing.
  • For the hair and dress, I do yarn over to make v stitch, it looks softer and beautiful
  • Do not stuff too tight.
  • You can use any type of yarn with appropriate crochet hook size to create different sizes using this pattern.

EARS (make 2)

  1. Rnd 1: 6sc into the MR (6)
  2. Rnd 2: chain 1 and turn, 6sc (6)
  3. Cut the yarn and leave a long tail for sewing

ARMS (make 2)

Start with white color yarn

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in the MR (6)
  2. Rnd 2: (2sc, inc) * 2 times
  3. Rnd 3-6: 8 sc (8)
  4. Change to ginger color yarn
  5. Rnd 7 - 9: 8 sc (8)
  6. Change to skin color yarn
  7. Rnd 10-18: 8 sc (8)
  8. Fasten off and cut the yarn
  9. Do not stuff the arms

LEGS (make 2)

Left leg

Using skin color yarn

  1. Make 8 chain and start on the 2nd chain from the hook. To avoid the hole of the sole, 1 crochet into the back bump (behind loop) of the foundation chain
  2. Rnd 1: 6 sc, inc3, 5 sc, inc (16)
  3. Rnd 2: inc, 5 sc, inc, sc, inc, 5sc, inc, sc (20)
  4. Rnd 3: dec, 4 sc, 4 dec, 4 sc, dec (14)
  5. Rnd 4: 3 sc, 4 dec, 3 sc (10)
  6. Stuff as long as you go
  7. Rnd 5 - 8: 10 sc (10)
  8. Rnd 9: (inc, 4 sc) * 2 times (12)
  9. Rnd 10-14: 12 sc (12)
  10. Rnd 15: 2 dec, 8 sc (10)
  11. Rnd 16: 10 sc (10)
  12. Rnd 17: (inc, 4sc) * 2 times (12)

  15. Fasten off.
  16. Stuff the legs because it will be harder to stuff when you crochet longer.

Right leg

  1. Make the same as left leg 1 to the end of round 28
  2. Change to the white color to make the underwear, crochet 7 single crochet stitches. The last stitch of round 28 should be in the middle of the inside of the leg. Chain 2 and join with the left leg at the first stitch of the new round. This is also the beginning of the round.
  3. In the next round, we join 2 legs together
  4. Rnd 29: Join 2 legs together as follows: 14 sc on the right leg, 2 sc on the chain, 14 sc on the left leg, 2 sc on the chain. Carefully count the number of stitches because stitch no.1 might be a bit tricky to see, you may forget to count this stitch.
  5. Rnd 30: 7 sc, inc, 14sc, inc, 9sc (34)
  6. Itake sure that the increases are all the middle of the hips
  7. Rnd 31-33: 34 sc (3 rounds)
  8. Rnd 34: 7sc, dec, 14 sc, dec, 9sc (32)
  9. Rnd 35: 6sc, dec, 14 sc, dec, 8sc (30)
  10. Change to skin color yarn
  11. Rnd 36: 30 sc (30)
  12. Rnd 37: (3 sc, dec) * 6 times (24)
  13. Rnd 38: (10 sc, dec) * 2 times (22)
  14. Rnd 39: 22 sc (22)
  15. Rnd 40: (dec, 9 sc) * 2 times (20)
  16. Rnd 41-43: 20 sc (3 rounds)
  17. In the next round, we will connect the arms to the body
  18. Rnd 44: 6 sc on the back of body, 8 sc around the arm, 9 sc on the front of body, 8sc around the arm, 5sc on the back of body. This round has 36 sts: 20 sts from the body and 16 sts from the two arms.
  19. TIPS: to avoid the opening under the armpit, crochet as follow: osc on the back of the body, 7 sc on the left hand then one decrease of st no.8 of the arm and st no.6 of the back body, then crochet 9 sc on the body front, 7sc on the right hand then one decrease of st no.8 of the arm and the last stitch of body front, 5sc on the body back
  20. Rnd 45: (4sc, dec) * 6 times (30)
  21. Rnd 46: (3sc, dec) * 6 times (24)
  22. Rnd 47: (2 sc, dec) * 6 times (18)
  23. Rnd 48: (sc, dec) * 6 times (12)
  24. Rnd 49-51: (3 rounds): 12 sc (12)
  25. Stuff the body. Do not cut the yarn because we continue to crochet the head.

HEAD

  1. Rnd 1: 12 inc
  2. Rnd 2: (sc, inc) * 12 times
  3. Rnd 3: (5 sc, inc) *6 times
  4. Rnd 4: (6 sc, inc) *6 times
  5. Rnd 5: (7 sc, inc) *6 times
  6. Rnd 6: (8 sc, inc) *6 times
  7. Rnd 7-19: 60 sc
  8. Insert the soft wire into the plastic straw and put into the neck to make the head straight
  9. Tips: Place the plastic straw between the body and the head, 2/3 of the straw in the body and 1/3 in the head. Stuff the body with fiberfill, do not stuff the neck to avoid the neck being big and rough
  10. If you use safety eyes, insert the safety eyes between round 10-11 with 8 sts apart.
  11. Rnd 20: (8 sc, dec) * 6 times
  12. Rnd 21: (7 sc, dec) * 6 times
  13. Rnd 22: (6 sc, dec) * 6 times
  14. Rnd 23: (5 sc, dec) * 6 times
  15. Rnd 24: (4 sc, dec) * 6 times
  16. Rnd 25: (3 sc, dec) * 6 times
  17. Start stuffing little by little from here
  18. Rnd 26: (2 sc, dec) * 6 times

  21. Stuff firmly, fasten off, cut the yarn and leave a long tail to weave the end through the front loop of each remaining stitches and pull tight to close. Make a knot and hide the end

HAIR

Hair wig

  1. Rnd 1: 6sc into the MR (6)
  2. Rnd 2: 6 inc (12)
  3. Rnd 3: (sc, inc) * 6 times (18)
  4. Using navy color yarn and bigger hook than the body (2.2mm hook)
  5. Rnd 4: (sc, inc, sc) * 6 times (24)
  6. Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) * 6 times (30)
  7. Rnd 6: (2 sc, inc, 2 sc) * 6 times (36)

Hair strands:

  1. HS 1--->13: Chain 32, start on the 3rd chain from the hook: 1 hdc, hde inc, 28 hdc, skip one stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch of round 6.
  2. HS 14: Chain 32, start on the 3rd chain from the hook: 1 hdc, hde inc, 28 hdc, skip one stitch, slip stitch into the FLO of the next stitch of round 6

BANGS

  1. HS 15: FLO Chain 9, start on the 2nd chain from the hook: sc, 8 hdc, skip one stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch of round 6
  2. HS 16: FLO Chain 8, start on the 2nd chain from the hook: sc, 7 hdc, skip one stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch of round 6
  3. HS 17: FLO Chain 8, start on the 2nd chain from the hook: sc, 7 hde, skip one stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch of round 6
  4. HS 18: FLO Chain 9, start on the 2nd chain from the hook: sc, 8 hdc, skip one stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch of round 6
  5. Now working on the BLO of BANGS
  6. Insert your hook and grab the yarn
  7. HS 19-22: Chain 39, start on the 3rd chain from the hook: 1 hdc, hde inc, 35 hdc, skip one stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch of round 6

Assembly

FACE:

  • Attach the eyes between round 11-12 with 8 sts apart and embroider the eyelashes
  • Embroider the eyebrow on round 15-16 with 4 stitches wide
  • Sew the nose between round 9-10 with 4 stitches apart by using skin color yarn and sewing 4 times
  • Sew the ears to round 9-13 with 6 stitches apart between the eyes and the ears.
  • Use white color yarn to embroider the whites of the eyes. The white part of the eye should be sewn from the center of the outside of the eye and embroider 1/3 of the eye. TIPS: To avoid the white go under the eyes, glue the eyes on the face without space for the white to go under or use transparent glue around the eye where the white is contacted
  • Use blush powder/acrylic paint to make up the doll's cheeks.

HAIR

  • Using pins to secure the hair strands to the appropriate positions on the head.
  • Firstly, pin the hair wig on the head.
  • Hair bang is in the middle of the 2 ears. Then pin hair strands respectively in place. The wrong side is facing up, right side is attached to the head. Pull strand 19-22 over the head and glue.
  • Using hot glue/fabric glue to attach the hair on the head.

RED BOW on the hair

  • Using red color yarn
  • Row 1: Chain 51, start to crochet on the 2nd chain from the hook: 50c, chain 1 and turn
  • Row 2: BLO 23 sc, 4 sist, 23 sc, chain 1 and turn
  • Row 3-6: repeat row 2
  • Cut the yarn and sew two edges together
  • Using another strand to tie in the middle to make a bow.

BOW on the dress

  • Using blue color yarn
  • Row 1: Chain 13, start to crochet on the 2nd chain from the hook: 12sc, chain 1 and turn
  • Row 2: 5 sc, 2 sist, 5sc, chain 1 and turn
  • Row 3-4: repeat row 2
  • Cut the yarn and weave the end
  • Ribbon: Chain 11, start to crochet on the 2nd chain from the hook: 10sc. Fasten off. Using the long ginger strand to tie two parts together in the middle

DRESS

  • Use bigger hook (2.2mm) for the dress
  • Using white color yarn
  • Rnd 1. Chain 22, start on the 2nd chain from the hook, 21 sc (21). Continue to crochet as many chains as you need to make a buttonhole - the number of chains depends on the button size. I make chain 5 to fit my 5mm button, sist into the 1st chain of chain 5.
  • Rnd 2: 4 sc, {hdc and de in the same stitch, de inc, de and hde in the same stitch; (for the first sleeve), 7 sc, (hdc and de in the same stitch, de inc, de and hde in the same stitch) (for the 2nd sleeve), 4 sc (27). Chain 1 and turn
  • Rnd 3: 4sc, chain 2, skip 6 stitches, 7sc, chain 2, skip 6 stitches, 4 sc (19). Chain 1 and turn
  • Rnd 4: 19 sc (10). Chain 1 and turn
  • Rnd 5-8: 19 sc, slip stitch to join the round.
  • Rnd 9: FLO 7sc, hdc, 3dc in the same st, hdc, 7sc, slip stitch to join and cut the yarn.
  • Change to ginger color yarn
  • Rnd 9 - BLO: Chain 2 (this chain 2 is not counted as a double crochet). de inc * 19 times (38) (Picture using blue color for reference only)
  • From now on, do not turn your work, work in joined rounds
  • Rnd 10: Chain 2 (this chain 2 is not counted as a double crochet). (dc, de inc) * 19 times (57), slip stitch to join
  • Rnd 11-12: chain 2 (this chain 2 is not counted as a double crochet) 57 dc (57)
  • Fasten off and weave the end.

COLLAR:

  • Using royal blue color yarn, insert your hook in between round 1 and crochet 6 slip stitches, chain 13, and make 6 slip stitches into the other side of the dress collar. Using sewing needle to sew in the middle of 13 chain on the dress - round 4.
  • Left collar: insert your hook into the 1st slip stitch and chain 1, crochet as follows:
  • Row 1: 3 hdc, 3hdc inc, 3hdc, 2sc, slip stitch. Chain 1 and turn
  • Row 2: slip stitch, 14 sc. Fasten off
  • Using white color yarn and make 14 slip stitches between row 1 and 2
  • Right collar: Do the same way as left collar

SHOES

  • Using royal blue color yarn and 2.2mm hook
  • Chain 7, start to crochet on the 2nd chain from the hook:
  • Rnd 1: inc, 4sc, inc4, 4sc, inc (16)
  • Rnd 2: 2 inc, 4 sc, 4 inc, 4 sc, 2 inc (14)
  • Rnd 3: BLO 24 sc (24)
  • Rnd 4-5: 24 sc
  • Rnd 6: dec, 6sc, 4dec, 6sc, dec (18)
  • Rnd 7: 7sc, 2dec, 7 sc (16)
  • Rnd 8: 16 sc (16)
  • Fasten off and weave the end
