CROCHET CAT PENCIL HOLDER


 Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn in grey, white, black, pink, blue, and various colors for the rainbow base
  • Crochet hook (size appropriate for your yarn)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Safety eyes
  • Fiberfill (optional for the ears and bow)

Techniques Used:

Pattern:

Pencil Holder Base:

1. Base:

  1. Using grey yarn, make a magic ring.
  2. Round 1: 6 sc in ring (6).
  3. Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12).
  4. Round 3: Sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch repeat around (18).
  5. Round 4: Sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch repeat around (24).
  6. Continue increasing evenly until the base reaches the desired diameter for the pencil holder.

2. Body:

  1. Once the base is the right size, work even rounds of sc without increasing.
  2. Switch to different colors as desired to create the rainbow stripes at the bottom.
  3. Continue working in sc until the holder reaches the desired height.

Cat Face:

1. Face:

  1. Using grey yarn, make a magic ring.
  2. Round 1: 6 sc in ring (6).
  3. Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12).
  4. Round 3: Sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch repeat around (18).
  5. Continue increasing evenly until the face reaches the
    desired size.
  6. Attach safety eyes and embroider the nose and mouth with black yarn.

Ears (make 2):

1. Ear:

  1. Using grey yarn, chain 5.
  2. Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and in each chain across (4).
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog twice (2).
  4. Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog (1).
  5. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
  6. Repeat for the second ear.
  7. Optionally, add a bit of fiberfill to the ears to give them a slight 3D effect.
  8. Sew the ears onto the top edge of the pencil holder.

Bow:

1. Bow:

  1. Using pink yarn, chain 10.
  2. Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and in each chain
    across.
  3. Rows 2-4: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each stitch across.
  4. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

2. Center Wrap: 

  1. Chain 5, single crochet in each chain across for 2 rows.
  2. Wrap around the center of the bow and sew in place.
  3. Attach the bow to one of the ears.

Assembly:

  1. Attach the cat face to the front of the pencil holder.
  2. Ensure all pieces are securely sewn on and weave in any
    loose ends.
